Official Twinning Ceremony
|
A delegation from the African nation of Malanje, Angola visited Hampton the week of September 27 through October 1, 2024 to formalize a sister city relationship. Members of the Hampton City Council, and Sister Cities of Hampton warmly welcomed Malanje Governor Marcos Nhunga, Minister of Administration and Territory, Dionísio Fonseca, 9 Malanje officials, and two translators to formalize our relationship with the Angolan Province.
The twinning ceremony between Hampton and Malanje, Angola was truly a historic moment for both communities as it marked the fifth sister city that Hampton has partnered with since the program began nationally in 1956—and the second from the African continent. Sister Cities of Hampton's president, Dianne Peterson served as the master of ceremonies for this long-awaited partnership ceremony. After the National Anthem of both the USA and Angola played, the partnership agreement was read to all in attendance. |
Speeches and video presentations by The Honorable Donnie R. Tuck and His Excellency Marcos Alexandre Nhunga highlighted the significance of the agreement symbolizing more than just paper between the two communities. Both emphasized it is just the start of putting together or creating opportunities for cultural, economic and educational exchanges that benefit each side. |
Once the agreement was publicly signed, Mayor Tuck was gifted with a Queen Nzinga Mbandi bust and Mayor Tuck presented Governor Nhunga with a colorful work of glass art. The glass "Unity Tree" weaves two root systems together to form a vibrant, flourishing tree, stronger together than apart. This special gift commissioned by the Hampton Convention & Visitor Bureau was created by local artist, Joanna Prees. |
In honor of the special occasion, Dionísio Manuel da Fonseca, Minister of Territorial Administration—Republic of Angola shared his heartfelt thanks and desire that the partnership spurs mutual investment in both directions, as well as improve opportunities for education and training for young Angolans. The smiles, hugs and handshakes of all in attendance transcended any language barriers in the room. |
