Strengthening Sister City Ties: Hampton's Delegation to Malanje, Angola

The members of the delegation included Dianne Peterson, President of Sister Cities of Hampton (SCH); Wanda Tucker, SCH Angola Chair and 1624 Society Board Member; Scott Martin, CEO of the Fort Monroe Authority; Vincent Tucker, President of the 1624 Society.

Angola Vice President, Esperança da Costa warmly welcomed the group. Dianne and Wanda shared a concrete initiative aimed at establishing exchange programs for scholarship recipients from Hampton University to Angola which will enhance their comprehension of the country's history. Furthermore, it will provide opportunities for Angolans visiting Hampton to explore African American history. An invitation was extended to the Vice President of the Republic to visit Hampton and participate in the ceremony celebrating the 250th anniversary of the country and the unveiling of the statue of the first enslaved to arrive here at Point Comfort, now Fort Monroe. — [News Article]

Located 380 kilometres (240 mi) east of Angola's capital Luanda, Malanje is projected to be the thirteenth fastest growing city on the African continent between 2020 and 2025. Hampton has the distinct honor of becoming Malanje's first sister city.
